Introduction

The Korea Health Panel Survey provides the most versatile data in conducting multidisciplinary analyses of and research on multiple levels of and interactions between individual, social, and environmental elements with considerations for dynamic, complex, and circular structures of heathcare expenditures. The data also provides information on uninsured portion, pharmaceutical as well as private health insurance expenditures. Furthermore, the Korea Health Panel Survey enables an in-depth analysis of not only information on health services utilization and care expenditures, but also identifies important factors affecting good healthcare and costly expenses across time.

Main goals of the development and dissemination of the Korea Health Panel Survey are to:
- Provide most versatile data base on healthcare behaviors and expenditures - Provide detailed information on private health insurance - Provide detailed data on pharmaceutical expenditures - Identify cross-sectional and longitudinal state of healthcare service use

Objectives of the Korea Health Panel Survey are as follows:

Short-term objectives are to:
- Estimate national healthcare expenditures with both individual and household as units of analyses
- Analyze healthcare financing and payments
- Analyze the characteristics of healthcare service providers and patients’ usage of health services
- Generate health and welfare-related indices to provide a basis for healthcare policies
- Develop a complete healthcare expenditure data via merging with national data on health insurance benefit

Mid-to-long-term objectives are to:
- Continuously monitor changes and identify trends in national health care expenditures
- Identify causal relationships of healthcare expenditures through longitudinal analysis
- Generate dynamic health and welfare-related indices as a basis for policy planning and evaluation

Anticipated results are to:
- Provide the basis for identifying changes in healthcare expenditures
- Lay the foundation for planning and improving health care policies
- Contribute to enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, and equality in healthcare services
- Ultimately, improve the quality of lives of the general population
