Data user FAQ

  • Q. What is the Korea Health Panel Survey?
    • A. The Korea Health Panel Survey is Korea's first healthcare panel survey that is administered annually about health lifestyles as well as healthcare services use and expenditures to the same panel of 7,000~8,000 household members. By linking the survey data with the National Health Insurance Service data, we have established dynamic data that enables tracking on mid-to-long-term healthcare services use and expenditures. The survey data has been made available for public use by eliminating identifiable personal information for privacy and confidentiality purposes.
  • Q. Who are the survey participants?
    • A. The initial Korea Health Panel Survey respondents were meticulously chosen to obtain national representativeness through enumerating districts excluding islands, special facilities, and dormitories out of 90% of the 2005 Population and Housing Census districts as a sample frame for total inspection. The total number of enumeration districts was about 350 across nation, with the survey targeting about 8,000 households and their household members. For more information, please refer to “Sampling” section under Survey Design” on our website.

  • Q. When will this year's survey data released?
    • A. It takes some time after survey completion to make available for public use. We take multiple actions to clean and protect data. Also, ,three waves of survey data are required to generate one year of consolidated data. We appreciate your patience.
  • Q. Do survey contents vary by survey wave?
    • A. Data usually consisted of same health and healthcare related questions, including general household information, member information, private health insurance, chronic health conditions, medication and use of medical supplies for three months or longer, and emergency/in-out patient care. Some waves may additionally include supplementary information such as inquiries made on long-term care and adult household members' health awareness and behaviors.
  • Q. How are the downloaded data organized?
    • A. Each annual data is available in SAS, SPSS, and STATA by specific data files depending on the information of your interest. Code book, a list of questionnaires, and the user guide are also available for download.
  • Q. Why does one household member show up repeatedly in the chronic health condition data?
    • A. Based on responses, the Korea Health Panel Survey data are organized by household, household member, and event when establishing the D/B. Responses from a household and a household member are recorded in one line, respectively.

The Korea Health Panel Survey establishes data by each individual's healthcare service use to deliver more detailed information, unlike other surveys where data on a single respondent are recorded in one line. For instance, if a household member uses healthcare services more than once, his or her data are accumulated, therefore appear by the frequency of healthcare service use
